GenForum tends to have a few big ones and Ancestry lots of little ones; where Clark and Clarke might be served by the same board on GenForum, they would be two separate ones on Ancestry. (I'm using "Clark" as an example; they may be separated on GF as well.) Many genealogy sites have user forums that discuss family names. Cindi's List can give you a list of sites to try.
