Do they really have my family genealogy?
If so, how did they get it?
Aren't we all protected by privacy act?
As a member also, I agree with Mr B11. Please check out www.familysearch.org, and if possible, a local center near you. People have nothing to fear with the information at the FHC, it is there only to help those searching for their family lineage.
Much of my maternal and paternal family can be found, and has been found, through the LDS information. Much we have supplied ourselves. However, my husband's family is not. I feel I must do everything I can to find and gather this information.
You do not need to be LDS to use this resource. You just need to be patient and diligent. Answers come to those who ask…some answers just take time.
Family History is a puzzle and without all the pieces, the picture is never complete. There are some pieces that you try to make fit, but never work. There are some pieces that you want to fit, but are not part of the puzzle. There are pieces that you wish didn't belong, but they do. There are pieces that you have searched for years and can't find. There are pieces that you have searched in the "closet", "toy box", everywhere, with no results, and then one day, BAM, only to find them where you have already looked. It's frustrating, but fun. You can find friends in strangers and family in neighbors.
If you haven't tried it, locate your nearest local center and go. The volunteers there will be more than happy to assist you.

they have the most extensive geneological library in the world.

Yes they do but I'm not sure that it includes everyone in the whole United states.

The mormons operate the largest geneology database in the world. It stems from their belief that they can be baptized by proxy for those who are already dead.
Privacy laws don't affect this information, as it's in the public domain. Anyone can go to the records office for any municipality and get a name and date of birth, as well as the parents name and city of their birth.

No, but they have genealogy charts for most of their members, and they have become the repository of some historical records that would otherwise have not been preserved.
This fits in with their practice of having ceremonies to baptize, marry etc for their ancestors who were not Mormons.
Their family trees are not to be relied upon. Consider them possible, until you can find verifying proof. They do not require documentation to establish relations between people.
The accuracy of a family tree is only as good as the vital records or other documentation that are provided to prove the people and their relationships.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a genealogist for almost 1/2 century I believe I can give you a fair answer to your question. 1. The church maintains one of the largest single repositories in the world for genealogical research. The repository is contained in a very large library in Salt Lake City, Secure vaults in the canyons above Salt Lake City and in numerous branch libraries located around the world. 2. These records are of many types but I think the type you are most concerned with are the records contained in Pedigree files and Family Group files. These records are there becaus one or more individuals have submitted them, whether a member of the church or not. These records may or may not be accurate, you would have no way of determining that from the record. 3. You, as a person, are protected by the Privacy act. Anything but a person's name, which is a common record, of anyone that is alive is marked private and there is no way to get it. If your information is found in other databases at the libraries it is there because it is a record open to the public. There has never been any program, that I've been made aware of, that has been set up to include everyones name in the United States. Hope this helps.

First of all I 'm LDS or a Mormon. We do not have evryones 100% info but the church does collect old records i.e birth death marriage records in general and file them . If you want to know more it is a great resource go to lds.org and click genealogy. We actually partnered with Elise Island to micro fish and file all their old records. As far as protection it's not like all your personal info so you have nothing to fear. I have been able to trace my family history back to 1780's. Cool stuff.

They have a large data base as most have attested to. I have found a number of mistakes with their information with just my family alone. I have heard the same from others as well. the biggest mistake I have found so far is they list my great uncle married to his step-mother. Other problems I have found is birth, marriage, and death dates.
I do not use their information because I find it unreliable.
