I want to claim my indian heritage, but do not know how to begin to search for this information.
Oh my, so many ways of finding the infomation there is, and I have included the links you will need to help you. Of course, in addition to this, you can also use the resources at your local library, they are only too happy to help you with your searches and queries.

First of all you need to find out everything you can from your family, make a note of any names and dates they can tell you. They might also have photos and certificates that might help.
I don't know a lot about Indian ancestry, but a few weeks ago when I did some research for a friend of mine whose G-G Grandmother was from India, I found her marriage record on this website:
http://www.fibis.org/
I also found some info on Indian records on:
http://www.familysearch.org/

This site has the different rolls and names of the people that were counted during the removal. There are histories, deeds, cencus' , cemetary records. There are also several links on the page to "how tos" and places to search out the Native American Heritage.
Not everythong is free, but everything I've looked at so far has been.
Gather all of the information you can, then go to the tribal officials.
It is not easy but don't give up.
Good Luck

First of all I will say if you are in this search for the money forget it.
You need to do the research to locate what ancestor is on the dawes roll. Once you have all the documentation that the tribe requires then you submit it all to the tribe for their consideration. There is no guarantee that you will be accepted so don't get your hopes up. If you can't find your ancestor on the dawes and provide all the documentation then don't even try submitting to the tribal offices.
