I don't know of a program, but I do know of a fantastic book that gives you tons of info and ideas and help in an easy to understand format and it also helps you to create your own family tree and has meanings for certain surnames, including where they originate from and how. It also has tons of addresses for further research and it was co-written by family historians to help you search through English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish records and even has real-life case studies.

It is called Explore Your Family's Past and it's by Reader's Digest but don't let that put you off - it really is good and received good reviews from genealogists

"An excellent, very detailed, yet highly accessible and beautifully illustrated guide to tracing your family history" - Society Of Genealogists

"Lively, enthusiastic, wide-ranging, informative and very user-friendly" - Family Tree Magazine

I'd started to get bored when I was researching my family history as I'd come up against so many brick walls and I didn't find Ancestry particularly good because a lot of the information is stuff you have to pay a subscription charge for, but my mum bought me this book as a surprise present and after reading just a part of it, my interest was renewed and within an hour I'd traced 7 of my ancestors from the 1800's onwards!

Try Amazon or ebay to get the book cheap - to buy it brand new, it costs around £26.99
References :
There are genealogy programs that help organize your research. They are to genealogy what "Word" is to creative writing.

PAF, from the Mormons, is free.

Family Tree Maker ($39 and up, depending on what you buy bundled with it) is the market leader in the USA.

Roots Magic ($29) is better than either, in my opinion. I was a computer programmer for 34 years. I have helped design data bases. RM's data base design is top-notch.

Reunion is the only one I know of that runs on a Mac.

You still have to do the research. You enter names, dates, places, relationships. The program records them. Every once in a while you run a problem report, just like you spell check in Word after you finish each chapter of your novel. The program will tell you what errors it finds; for instance, someone born after they died. That is an easy mistake to make. I have muffed the century on someone born in 1870 and died in 1945. I have had two people and put #1's date in for #2. I have made typos; "1045" for the death instead of "1945".

You can Google "Genealogy software comparisons" to get professioanl reviewer's ratings on programs.

Just as "Word" makes it easier to revise one paragraph without having to re-type the whole chapter, a genealogy program makes it easy to revise a family tree when you discover the Michael Jablonski you thought was Joseph's brother is really his uncle.
References :
You can download a basic family tree program for free at www.familysearch.org

Of course that only helps to organize the information that you have found already.

If you have an account with Ancestry.com it will look for matches of people in your tree with other people's tree and historical records.

Genesreunited is okay and quite a bit cheaper, but Ancestry is the most useful.
References :
I use genes reunited on the Internet. it has a few things that are useful. Just use the free version until you try it out and get the hang of it.
I used to have a paid account (which isn't hugely expensive) but don't have time to do much work on my genealogy so I let the account lapse back to free. I will pay again when I have time to work on it. This might be useful for you to do as well and save you money.
References :
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk

I learned that my father was raised by his grandfather and given his grandfathers last name. This brings me to a new starting point trying to find the next line in genealogy of my ancestors. He was the product of a sixteen year old girl that got into the family way and in those day this is how it was done.
References :
History in a human context. Aspects of history not covered in college (I was a history major). Aspects of human faith, dogged determination to survive, strength of character, and willingness to undergo extreme hardship to better oneself and ones community.

Most of my lines date to religious wars of Europe, colonization of New England and New Amsterdam, the founding of the United States, and the pioneering trailblazing of the 1800's; but the lessons are the same, regardless of where ones ancestors originated.

I am now in awe of these people, and often think that we have mutated into spoiled brats. They certainly would think we complain too much, expect to much, and work too little.
References :
The most interesting thing I learned was what our ancestors went through to come to this country and start a new life in a strange land and learn a new language. Some with only a few possessions.
References :
My ancestor travled from Wales to the Colonies with Willam Penn. Another cool thing is that my great grandmother shot the sheriff in her town and it killed him. She also tried to shoot the deputy but missed. It might sound dodgy but it is very true.
References :
I have been researching my family history for 3 years.
